The Emperor arrived in Horcajo de las Torres, a town situated in the north of the province of Ávila and possibly the birthplace of Isabel la Católica, on the 6th of November, 1556. According to the writings, this brought relief to Carlos V because, as he himself said, "Thank God I don’t have anyone visitors or receptions".
The village, that has been dealt a cruel hand by history, was of great importance during the 12th century. Proof of this lies in the fact that, already in 1250, the Iglesia de San Julián y Santa Basilisa was consecrated by the Bishop of Ávila. The beauty of Horcajo was ruined in 1700 when the whole village was destroyed during the battle between the troops of the future king, Felipe V, and the Archduke, Carlos of Austria.
