The arrival to Cabezón de Pisuerga, in the province of Valladolid, was one of the most moving moments for the emperor on this his last journey. This is where he met his grandson, Don Carlos, on October 12th, 1556. After eating, probably lechazo, one of the typical dishes of the region, Carlos V started towards Valladolid, 14 km away, where he arrived that same night.
In Cabezón de Pisuerga, the traveller should not skip a visit to the Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción, which dates from the 16th century. The Ermita del Cristo de las Batallas and the Monasterio de Santa María de Palazauelos, about three kilometres away and surrounded by a landscape of rare beauty on the banks the Pisuerga river, are just some of the examples of what can be seen here. In addition to all this there is also the bridge, one of the most significant signs of identity of the municipality, of a Roman origin but substituted during the Middle Ages by the current one, which was restored during the 17th century.
