On that same 4th of November in 1956, after leaving Valladolid, the Emperor Carlos V arrived in the town of Valdestillas at around eight o'clock at night. He spent the night here before setting off again in the morning on his journey to Medina del Campo.

Valdestillas is situated in the lowlands of the river Adaja. It is near the crossing formed by the former Roman bridge that was rebuilt in brick and stone after having been destroyed by the French in 1812 during the battle of Arapiles. Of its monuments and buildings, the most outstanding is the Iglesia de Santa María del Milagro which houses a 17th century Baroque altar piece. The parish church dates back to the 16th century and the hermitage, the Ermita de Cristo del Amparo, on the Avenida de la Estación, houses a 17th century sculpture of Christ: a copy by Gregorio Fernández.
