Tordesillas was the setting for one of Castilla y León’s most historic events, as it was there that the famous Treaty of Tordesillas was signed in 1494, bringing the conflict with Portugal to an end. Negotiations between the Catholic Monarchs and King John II of Portugal were held in the House of the Treaty of Tordesillas / Cartography Hall, two adjacent palaces that are today open to the public.
The conditions of the Treaty divided the navigational zones and territories of the Atlantic Ocean and the New World by drawing up a meridian situated 370 leagues to the west of the Cape Verde islands in order to prevent any conflict of interests between the Spanish monarchy and the Kingdom of Portugal.
