Situated in Burgos, in the northernmost part of the area known as Las Merindades, bounded to the north by the Somo mountain range and Castro Valnera peak.

During the repopulation of the Middle Ages, It was included in the domains of the Monastery of Oña. The town lies at the centre of the region’s commercial activity, with a weekly market held on Tuesdays.

The church stands in Plaza de Sancho Gracia. Other noteworthy buildings include the Town Hall with its covered colonnades and Chiloeches, a fine example of Renaissance civil architecture dating back to the 16th and 17 centuries.
