The traditional hospitality for which this town is renowned dates back to the year 932 and the first recorded mention of the hospital that tended to travellers making their way along the ancient Roman roads and who, like the modern-day pilgrims, were heading towards Santiago de Compostela.
The roots of this town lie in the days of the Romans when it was known as Bedunia. It was repopulated in the 10th century and the name was changed to Vanieza. Its period of greatest influence came in the 16th century when it was the site of one of the most important markets in Castilla y León.
There is a popular saying in Spanish that says something like "God made Saturdays, monks made the market and the merchants the town" which sums up to perfection the idiosyncrasy of the locals and the history of their town. Today, the highlights of the produce grown here are undoubtedly the delicious beans that are famous around the world.
