History has it that the Bazán family, who originally came from Navarre, were the lords of the Valduerna region in the province of León. However, the town does not date from this period as it was here that King Alphonse V built his palace. Indeed, the town dates back to the Middle Ages, when it enjoyed its period of greatest power and influence as the site of the King’s palace. The Roman road and the later cart track also enabled it to prosper and develop into the essentially farming town it is today.
On leaving the town in the direction of Celada, pilgrims will come across a Roman bridge over the River Turienzo. This superb construction has four arches and was restored at the end of the last century.
