Since 1960 Puente Duero has been a district of Valladolid, even though it is situated almost 12 kilometres outside the city. Its name comes from the medieval bridge over the River Duero around which the town sprang up as a staging post or stopping point for travellers.
It is also home to one of the most active associations related to the Madrid Way of the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago, the Valladolid Pilgrims’ Route Association (Ajova).
This town is also the site of the Parish Church of Santa María.
