This initiative of the World Tourism Organization has the purpose of maximizing the contribution of the sector to the reduction of regional inequalities and the fight against the depopulation of rural areas. Likewise, it seeks to promote the role of tourism in the appreciation and preservation of rural towns and their landscapes, knowledge systems, biological and cultural diversity, as well as local values and activities, without forgetting gastronomy.
Nominations are encouraged that value the uniqueness of each town and publicize the best initiatives with a view to making tourism a vehicle that takes rural areas towards a better future.
The call is open to candidatures from towns with the following characteristics required by the UNWTO:
The process to follow consists of three phases:
- First phase, the Junta de Castile and León, from among all the applications received, in accordance with the instructions sent from the Ministry, will select a maximum of three, which will be submitted to the Secretary of State for Tourism.
- Second phase, an Evaluation Committee, chaired by the Secretary of State for Tourism or a person designated by her, and which will be made up of personnel from the Secretary of State for Tourism itself, Turespaña, Segittur, the FEMP and the Association of the Most Bonitos de España will select up to a maximum of eight candidates from among those presented by the Autonomous Communities. The eight selected candidates will be presented to the UNWTO.
- Third phase, the candidacies presented by Spain will be examined, together with those presented by other Member States, by the UNWTO Secretariat to verify compliance with the admission criteria and the adequacy of the presentation process.
Candidates that meet the admission criteria will be evaluated by an independent UNWTO advisory committee that will evaluate:
- Yo. the information provided for each of the evaluation areas and
- ii. the justification of the candidacy (motivation, key tourist data and general presentation of the candidacy).
The deadline for submitting candidatures is Monday, June 5, 2023.
