A major town on the banks of the River Carrión that played a key role in the evolution of town life in the province of Palencia. Saldaña stands out as the only town on the plains to be built next to the river, above the valley, amidst a landscape of gullies with their distinctive gold tone. Particularly worthy of note are the gullies of San Juan, which boasts the remains of an Iron Age fortified settlement; Morterona, which has a castle; and Paramillo, at a height of more than 1,000 metres and a steep slope.

Saldaña’s old square lies at the heart of the town. Dating back to the 10th and 11th century, this elongated rectangular square is colonnaded on all sides.
