This set of sites serves as an essential reference for the study of Neanderthal occupations in Castilla y León and represents one of the last remaining examples of Neanderthal habitat in all of Western Europe.

The entire archaeological zone comprises four prehistoric sites: three archaeological sites, with remains of occupations by the last Neanderthals who inhabited the European continent, and one site that has yielded remains from the Early Bronze Age (Bell Beaker).

Dated between 44,000 and 41,000 years before present, it is characterized by being a site with three distinct periods of occupation. It is one of the most complete and best-preserved chronostratigraphic sequences on the Iberian Peninsula for the study of the late Middle Paleolithic. The only known piece of Neanderthal-painted movable art was recovered from the San Lázaro Shelter.
