Museum of Avila. The winter piece presented on this occasion is an Islamic funerary stele, from Arévalo. It was found by chance in 2021, along with thirteen others, in the area around the Molino de Don Álvaro de Luna, next to the Adaja river . They were all reused as steps of a staircase and caps for a retaining wall.
Since the beginning of this century, when this type of archaeological pieces began to be studied and classified scientifically, they were only known from the city of Avila, where the largest Islamic community in the Kingdom of Castile existed between the 13th and 15th centuries. Little by little, since then, research has been identifying some isolated examples in other places, such as in El Barco de Ávila, which also had a small Mudejar aljama.
The discovery of these stelae in Arévalo is therefore an important novelty, adding a new location to the knowledge of Castilian Islamic stelae. Not in vain, Arévalo was also the seat of one of the most significant medieval Muslim communities in Castile.
The piece will be presented with a lecture by Javier Jiménez Gadea, director of the Avila Museum, entitled "New archaeological evidence of medieval Castilian Islam: the funerary steles of Arévalo".
It will take place at the Avila Museum (Casa de los Deanes), on February 27, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. It will be in person, with free admission until full capacity is reached, and can also be followed via streaming, through the EE TEMPORARY EXHIBITION: "THE MAGIC HANDS"
