The General is a 1926 American silent comedy film starring and produced by Buster Keaton, who also co-directed it with Clyde Bruckman. The film is based on a true story that took place in 1862 during the Civil War, the so-called Great Locomotive Chase, and adapted from William Pittenger's book Daring and Suffering: A History of the Great Railway Adventure, published in 1863.
The General was a critical and financial failure upon its initial release (Keaton's biggest financial failure), but decades later it began to be regarded as one of his best films. (Wikipedia, 30-12-2024)
