The Castilian and Leonese Institute of Language and the Provincial Council of Segovia are organizing on Monday, December 30 (8:30 p.m.), at the Los Caños de Carbonero El Mayor Cultural Center, with the collaboration of the City Council, the staging of the play Sancho in Barataria , originally by Miguel de Cervantes, by the theater company Azar Teatro. Directed by Javier Esteban and performed in its different roles by the actors Mercedes Asenjo, Francisco Mateo and Carlos Tapia, the production remains faithful to the Cervantine spirit, using a familiar language, accessible to all ages,
Barataria, an Aragonese town surrounded by the Ebro River, is the place where one of the craziest and funniest episodes of the popular novel Don Quixote takes place, which appears in several chapters of the second part of the novel. Don Quixote and his squire meet some dukes, who invite them to stay in their castle. These, for fun and among many other jokes, grant Sancho the government of the longed-for island that his master Don Quixote had promised him. Curiously, Sancho, who is mocked as simply lacking intelligence, conducts his government with wisdom and good judgment, giving a lesson in common sense to all those who try to mock him.
Both the advice Don Quixote gives Sancho in his farewell to be a good ruler and a good judge, and the conclusions Sancho draws when he decides to resign from his post having behaved honorably, are life lessons from which we can learn and which hold up a mirror to reality. Barataria is also an imaginary and dreamlike place, sometimes with nightmarish overtones, but from which you can wake up. A place where Sancho's goodness prevails over the cruelty of his jeers and where justice is possible.
Three actors, in the purest tradition of popular theatre, bring to life all the characters that appear on stage. A single stage element helps to configure the different spaces in which the performance takes place.
