- THE QUEVEDO THEATRE ON STAGE FOR THE FIRST TIME -
Polvo será, mas polvo enamorado is a burlesque comedy that shows the most carnal, vehement, fatal and loving work of Quevedo's repertoire. A selection of his short plays, lyrics, dances and sonnets, to offer the feeling of his sardonic vision of the fragility of life, and as a tribute to the greatest poet that the golden age of Spain saw.
The plot of this burlesque comedy is built around an anecdote at the beginning: the burial of a comedian by his fellow entertainers and the appearance of Death who comes to take the deceased away. This plot serves as the basis for the development of various poetic pieces, and other theatrical pieces, such as the interludes of the Caballero de La Tenaza, Marión, and El Miserable, which have not been performed since the 17th century.
The work shows a company of four comedians in the form of Gangarilla (the name given in the 17th century to traveling comedy companies made up of four actors who played both female and male roles), and the aforementioned character of Death, a recurring fateful and sarcastic character in numerous of Quevedo's works.
The Burlesque Comedies of the Golden Age were pieces of absurd humor that were performed during Carnival, forming part of courtly celebrations. On stage they show a "world turned upside down" where everything is grotesquely parodied, degraded, showing a cruel satire of life.
The scene opens a path to the senselessness of seeking happiness with fate at our backs, but also to challenging destiny with a dream. Quevedo wounds, and heals.
"... his body will leave, not his care;
They will be ashes, but it will have meaning;
"They will be dust, but dust in love."
