My name is Laura. When I was four years old, my family bought a ruined water mill. Thirty years later, I interviewed Angelita, the woman who ground in that mill as a child.

A WHEEL THAT TURNS is a one-person stage piece, halfway between Document Theatre, Object and Material Manipulation Theatre, and Storytelling. Based on a process of interviews with inhabitants of a rural region of Avila, the work deals with how life was sustained in the villages based on a series of experiences of the last living generation of water millers.

Mariano had to spread his blanket on the ice on the road so that the donkey wouldn't slip when he went out to deliver in the winter. Esperanza didn't go to deliver, her brothers did that. Meanwhile, she broke the ice on the river so she could wash clothes and wash dishes. Angelita had to run out of school and hide between some stones on top of the grain sacks so that the supply inspector wouldn't fine her father. Aurora knows the names of all the stones, hills, fields, cliffs, bridges... Even though she doesn't remember what she did this morning. Guille and Eme return to the shepherd's hut where they threshed as children. After sixty years they want to see if it's still standing. In the summer, Jesús had to grind at night and go out to find the clever guy who at four in the morning started watering and cut off the water. Feliciana never missed a San Juan festival, not even that time when there was a storm and her father didn't let her. Because she ran away to see the boy who had set her up...

A WHEEL THAT SPINS is a tribute to anonymous lives and places. My gift back so we don't forget. Made with water, earth, straw, grain and flour. A circle.
