THE MAN WHO PLANTED TREES

This is the wonderful story of Elzéard Bouffier, an imaginary but entirely credible shepherd who spent many years planting trees in a large area of Provence, turning what was once a desolate wasteland into an area full of life and greenery.

The author's story begins in 1913, when he met the solitary shepherd who planted trees, and ends in that same region more than thirty years later, when he visits it after the war and finds it transformed into an orchard.

It is the story of the encounter of two men in the midst of an indescribable loneliness. One is a shepherd who dedicates his life to reforesting the environment in which he lives to save the earth. The other is a young man who is searching for himself, who discovers that will and generosity are the weapons of resilience. All told from the understanding of nature, the creative force of the human being and the love of small details.

Adaptation of the work by Jean Giono.
