The Lord of Bembibre 2.1 is a theatrical version based on the historical novel by Enrique Gil y Carrasco, published in 1846, at the height of romanticism, and tells the story of the unfortunate love of Don Álvaro Yáñez, the last lord of Bembibre, and Doña Beatriz Osorio. The plot is combined with the fall of the Order of the Temple.
Raúl Gómez and Trinidad Osorio from El Bierzo, make a contemporary reading of 'El Señor de Bembibre' in this version, which leaves aside the historical novel part to focus on the more human part of the text, on the story of love and heartbreak between Don Álvaro and Doña Beatriz.
In this production, Doña Beatriz takes on a greater role, as her decisions are what make the plot move forward and draw attention to the concept of romantic love, which is so often behind abuse and gender violence. Beatriz is the victim and Álvaro is the one who has to save her. The production vindicates the leading role of women in literature.
In this production, innovation comes through the use of everyday objects in theatre, which are transformed into puppet characters. And the use of life-size puppets of the actors. In this adaptation, Fabularia Teatro also looks back to the aesthetics of Tim Burton's films and presents Doña Beatriz as "a corpse bride" who "gets married when she is already dying and enjoys that marriage in eternity."
'El Señor de Bembibre' was written in the 19th century but set in medieval times, so at the present time these characters have been married for 700 years and now wonder what has happened between them after those years together.
