THE HAPPIEST DAY OF OUR LIFE

August 1964, Socuéllamos, Ciudad Real. On the eve of their First Communion, Spain's most famous quadruplets roll around in their beds. They cannot sleep thinking about the long-awaited and feared moment of receiving the Body and Blood of Christ. The innocence of their conversations exposes the stereotypes of 1960s Spain on the verge of what must be "the happiest day of their lives." The shadow of the severe hand of religion hangs over them, the fear of sinning and the terror of disappointing others (and themselves).

Twenty years later, the quadruplets meet again. Same room, identical sleeplessness, although now "that other happiest day of their lives" is their wedding. The nerves, doubts and confessions appear again under the cover of the sheets in a very different political and social context: socialist Spain and the movement. The sisters are no longer the same, although the moral clichés that still survive are still attached to the seams of their nightgowns.
