" Fray Gerundio de Campazas, alias Zotes" , by José Francisco de Isla (Father Isla) (1703-1781)

In 2003, the Third Centenary of the Birth of Father Isla was celebrated, and Fabularia Teatro co-produced this show with the Tierra de Campos Theatre Centre, with a version and direction by Raúl Gómez.

This is the only theatrical adaptation that has been made of the novel of the same name.

The novel was published in 1758 and was a real best-seller at the time, so much so that in the first twenty-four hours of its publication 800 copies were sold; and within a week the entire first edition of more than 3,000 copies had been sold out.

The novel was banned by the Inquisition and was included in Rome's Index of Prohibited Books .

There are many scholars who compare Fray Gerundio with Don Quixote:

A didactic novel and a treatise on the classes and forms of the spirit. Its satire completely divided the government and revived the inquisitorial genre. It generated numerous writings and an incalculable number of "apologies."

Despite its difficulty, today's viewer enjoys a good interpretation of the 18th century text.

A fun, entertaining satire that brings this classic from the Age of Enlightenment closer to the 21st century viewer , in the style of Rafael Álvarez "El brujo".
