When we enter any church, we are accustomed to immediately directing our gaze to the main altar, where a retable of overwhelming dimensions awaits us, which, with its presence, assumes all the prominence within the building. However, this is something typical of the Iberian Peninsula and which, even among us, only developed at a late stage of the Middle Ages, from the 14th century onwards. Before then, altar decorations were much smaller and simpler. Almost forgotten today, this conference will draw our attention to the first Castilian retables, also highlighting their patrimonial problems.

The speaker, Fernando Gutiérrez Baños, is Professor of Art History at the University of Valladolid. He is dedicated to the study of medieval art, especially that of the 13th and 14th centuries, and has specialized in the study of painting from that period, in the study of the early development of the altarpiece and, in general, in the study of patronage and promotion of the arts.
