The title of the book, "The Borgen Syndrome," is inspired by the series "Borgen" (2010), which, through the character of Birgitte Nyborg, the first woman to become Prime Minister of Denmark, narrates the inner workings of Danish politics and the difficulties women face in maintaining positions of power. This series has inspired writer Nuria Varela, a specialist in gender violence, to write about the difficulties women face in maintaining positions of power. In her work, Varela reflects on the presence and absence of women in decision-making, asserting that there are few places where there is equal power, and that even governments that appear to have it are not truly equal. Nuria also criticizes the difference in the price women pay compared to men for being in positions of power. The indicators are clear: being in a decision-making position and having a full life, in the sense of being able to decide about your family, your children, seems not to be a reality for many women.
