Haiku is a type of Japanese poetry where the word insinuates and suggests through brevity. It consists of a poem made up of three verses of five, seven and five syllables respectively, without rhyme.
Traditional haiku is distinguished from other short forms of poetry by its direct or indirect reference to the contemplation of the environment, often through the use of words evoking the seasons. Its poetics are generally based on wonder and the moving feeling that nature and its relationship with humans produce in the poet. The painting or image that accompanies the poem is known as Haiga.
