In a small town in Mississippi, police officer Sam Wood (Warren Oates) discovers the body of an industrialist. Shortly after, he arrests a black man at the station who, after being questioned by the local police chief, Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger), turns out to be a Philadelphia police inspector named Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier). Both officers decide to collaborate to investigate the murder.
