Juan Carlos Matilla Alvarez

Toro (Zamora) 1968 – Palencia 2021

This exhibition has been organised to remember a great painter from Zamora, born in Toro and passionate about his land, its natural surroundings and its people. Despite his early death, he left us a magnificent artistic legacy that will not leave anyone indifferent who stops to observe every detail of his painting.

He graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Salamanca. From 1986 until his death he combined the development of his pictorial project with teaching as a professor of Plastic Arts in Carrión de los Condes (Palencia).

From a very young age he began to be valued artistically and to show his work in individual and collective exhibitions throughout Spain and the United States, also forming part of art collections of various public and private institutions.

For a painter like MATILLA, the elements of nature are not simply green or yellow, but within themselves they hide a whole range of nuances that only wise and passionate eyes would know how to appreciate and capture on a simple white canvas. Every small detail of the natural environment is important, a simple dry leaf, a blade of grass, a reflection in the water, or a battered tree trunk are appreciated, sublimated and praised as they deserve, since they are a true wonder of nature.

Like the trees that transcend us, rooted in the earth, Juan Carlos will always remain, rooted in our lives.
