Opus 26 is a symphonic poem written by the Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. It was originally written in 1899 and later revised in 1900. The piece lasts approximately seven minutes, and for most of its length it develops in a turbulent rhythm and style, with a great orchestral charge, symbolizing the oppression and struggle of the Finnish people, ending in a hymn of hope. This piece was composed with patriotic motives, to mobilize popular opposition to the revocation of Finnish autonomy by the government of the Russian Empire. The different titles that the work received to circumvent Tsarist censorship became famous, among them Happy Sentiments at the Dawn of Spring in Finland.
