Play has been an activity present in people's daily lives since the dawn of time. For most people, play serves a recreational, socializing purpose and has no negative consequences, which is why it is considered a socially acceptable activity.
Due to the increase in online gambling, the advertising bombardment we receive from all media outlets, the proliferation of sports betting, and the lack of control over the growing number of gambling halls in cities, a significant increase in the number of gamblers has been observed, as well as a worrying decrease in the age at which gambling is first initiated.
At first, gambling can be fun, but over time, the pleasurable activity disappears and people gamble to eliminate negative feelings (guilt, sadness) and what started out as something occasional can turn into a real dependency that not only affects the player (ruin, loss of control, self-deception, lying and isolation) , but also ends up damaging their entire family and social environment (codependency).
In this session of Prohibido Callar (It's Prohibited to Keep Silent), David Burgos , a psychologist at ABAJ , the Burgos-based association for the rehabilitation of pathological gambling, will explain the mechanisms that can lead a person to become a pathological gambler and how this can impact their entire social and family network. He will also discuss video game addiction, which, while intended as a form of entertainment, also has potentially negative consequences for the mental health of children, adolescents, and adults.
Given the lack of channels to help these people regain control of their lives, ABAJ was founded as an association in Burgos in 1988 with the aim of supporting them in their rehabilitation and recovery from this illness.
