From Peña La Vela to Hinojosa de Duero

Located in the Arribes del Duero Natural Park. The border location of Hinojosa greatly affected it during the Spanish-Portuguese wars, but it also favored commercial relations with Portugal. Sometimes agriculture and livestock did not provide sufficient economic resources for the subsistence of the inhabitants, who found a way to obtain income in smuggling. These illegal exchanges led to the opening of border posts with guardinhas on the Portuguese side and carabineros on the Spanish side. The smugglers devised passages along the winding paths of the Arribes to the narrow fords of the Duero, which can be discovered along the route, or they crossed the river with the guindaleta system, a rudimentary zip line.
