Gredos Norte in spring is disguised in a dazzling yellow, when the piornos bloom.
The Piorno en Flor Festival, which has been celebrated since 2011, offers the opportunity to enjoy more than sixty-five thousand hectares of forest tinted in the same color, a captivating experience, with an attractive program of activities around this humble shrub.
Although the piorno exists in many places in the world, only in Gredos Norte (Avila) are these large areas illuminated with different yellows and 23 documented varieties.
In the past it was an essential plant for the survival of the inhabitants of the area, who used it as fuel, to roof stables, to protect themselves from the cold and to make utensils such as brooms or baskets, among others.
Today it is a great tourist attraction, a driving force for the inhabitants of the area, who organize and join forces to become hosts for those who visit Gredos Norte during the months of May and June.
