Jakarta, 1965. Inexperienced Australian reporter Guy Hamilton (Mel Gibson) is given the opportunity of a lifetime when he is sent as a special correspondent to Indonesia. Against the backdrop of the turbulent communist uprising against President Sukarno, he meets Billy Kwan (Linda Hunt), an enigmatic photographer, and Jill Bryant (Sigourney Weaver), an attractive woman who works at the British embassy.
