The Provincial Historical Archive of Soria hosts an exhibition on Soria schools in the 20th century.

The exhibition presents a careful selection of ninety photographs and thirty unique documents from the Archive's own collection, which capture the essence of school life throughout the last century.

Today, November 26, 2024, the territorial delegate of Soria, Yolanda de Gregorio , attended the inauguration at the Provincial Historical Archive of Soria, a cultural institution managed by the Junta de Castilla y León, of the opening of the exhibition "Ecos del Aula: images and memories of the Soria schools" , which considers it a nostalgic window to the past that invites us to discover the classrooms and teachings of other times .

During the presentation, De Gregorio recalled that throughout the last century, the province of Soria always raised the flag of education as one of its greatest exponents, making literacy a benchmark for its greatest achievements. With more than 600 "primary education" schools, even in the smallest municipalities, the province guaranteed that education reached even the most remote corners.

This exhibition, curated by Carlos Parra and María Morales , archivist and photographer respectively at the Provincial Historical Archive of Soria, brings together a careful selection of ninety photographs and thirty unique documents from the Archive's collection, which capture the essence of school life throughout the 20th century. From borders commemorating generations of students to exercise books, reading books and objects evoking the daily life of those classrooms, such as a desk or even a briefcase to carry books. According to the organizers, this exhibition seeks not only to awaken memories in its visitors, but also to invite a collective reflection on the value of education in the continuous training of future generations.

Wherever there were students, there was always a classroom; from schools such as the Sagrado Corazón or La Arboleda, to the small and modest rural schools, all shared the same educational spirit. The tour of the exhibition reminds us of the classrooms impregnated with the smell of chalk on the blackboards, the waxed two-person desks and, in the other corner, a library cupboard and geographical maps near the teacher's desk. This was the common setting of school life in Soria.

  • Photographs originating from between the 1920s and 1970s of the last century.

The documentation shown comes from the Provincial Education Department, which was transferred to the Provincial Historical Archive of Soria in 2002, and from some closed schools that sent their documentation directly to the centre. Among the documents there are also curious school projects.

The photographs in the exhibition, taken between the 1920s and 1970s, belong to various collections in the Archive, but the one from the Vives Collection stands out, since most of the photographs of the San José and Escolapios schools were taken by Salvador Vives . Also noteworthy are the photographs taken by Severiano Latorre Calvo , a teacher from Valdeavellano de Tera, in the 1920s.

The school supplies on display (globe, set square, protractor, compass, etc.) are important, coming from the closed schools, as well as other items loaned by various individuals.

Likewise, school furniture has been donated for the exhibition, such as a blackboard from the Carrascosa de la Sierra school, by its City Council, or a desk that belonged to the Rebollar school, left by a private individual.

The exhibition can be visited until the end of February 2025 , from Monday to Friday , from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
