Ludwig van Beethoven wrote 32 piano sonatas between 1795 and 1822 (he also wrote three juvenile sonatas at the age of 13 and one unfinished sonata, the WoO. 51). Although not originally intended to be a significant whole, as a whole they comprise one of the most important collections of works in music history. Hans von Bülow called them "The New Testament" of piano literature (He considered The Well-Tempered Clavier and the other keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach "The Old Testament").
Beethoven's piano sonatas came to be seen as the first cycle of major piano pieces suitable for public and private performance. They form "a bridge between the worlds of the salon and the concert hall." The first to perform them all in a single concert cycle was Hans von Bülow and the first complete recording is by Artur Schnabel for the His Master's Voice label. (Wikipedia)
