This is the last municipality in the province of Valladolid on the Madrid Way of the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago. This small town standing on the banks of the River Cea was settled on the orders of Count Hernán Mentales, who granted it a series of privileges.
The origins of the name of this town are uncertain, with theories ranging from Jewish, Celtic or even Ancient Greek roots. Some believe it comes from the Latin terms medica or merga. Just outside the town visitors will have the chance to admire various species of birds, especially the great bustard, the world’s heaviest flying bird.
This town also includes the following sites of interest: the Church of San Miguel and the ruins of the Church of Santiago.
