A paleographic study developed between 2003 and 2010 by the Castellano and Leonese Institute of Language, under the direction of Professor José Manuel Ruiz Asencio and which has the academic endorsement provided by the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), points to the Valpuesta Cartulary as the oldest written expression of Castilian, dating back to the 9th century.

This research confirms that the documentation of the Burgos Monastery of Santa María de Valpuesta collects the oldest testimonies of the romance spoken in Castile, which is why it places Castile and León as the Spanish Community that has become the cradle of the language in its own right.

The Cartulary of Valpuesta is a documentary set made up of a total of 187 documents written in Latin by 34 scribes from this monastery.
