Traditionally a hub connecting Galicia and the Court. The boroughs Benavente and Santa Cristina took it in turns to operate the barge that provided transport across the river. This meeting point for travellers soon became a busy centre for trade.
Today pilgrims can walk freely along the traffic-free local roads, making this an attractive an easy stage, ideal for admiring the delightful scenery.
This town is also the site of Church of La Magdalena.
