This town, part of the Comarca del Pan - literally the ‘Bread Region’ due to the vast cereal fields - was repopulated by the rulers of the Kingdom of León, following the course of the River Duero, between the 10th and 12th centuries. The town is renowned for its industrial, agricultural and livestock activity. Pilgrims arrive in Roales along paths which are also lined by the ancient milestones; especially worthy of note are those situated at the entrance and on the way out of the town.
This town is also the site of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
