The origins of this town lie in the farm that formed part of the Monastery of Moreruela, situated some 3.5 kilometres away. The route gives pilgrims the chance to admire from close up this magnificent and imposing monastery. The apse, which is still standing today, gives some idea of the vast size of what was once an influential Cistercian Monastery and the spiritual centre of the north of the province of Zamora since the 12th century. Other parts of what was once a large complex are now in ruins.
The road divides the town into two and it is here that the Silver Route, under the name the Mozarabic-Sanabrés Way, enters Galicia through the province of Ourense.
This town is also the site of the Church of San Juan Bautista and Quintos Bridge.
