The twilight of Almanzor
- Position
- Calatañazor
According to the most probable chronicles, it was the summer of 1002 when the leader Almanzor returned from razing the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla to the citadel of Medinaceli, from where he controlled the border of Al-Andalus with Castile.
In the Valley of Blood, as the extensive esplanades north of Calatañazor have been called, he was surprised by a coalition of Christian armies.
Once his army was defeated and badly wounded, he was taken in retreat to the village of Bordecorex where he died. His remains were taken to Medinaceli to be buried in the courtyard of the citadel, there they were lost track of and have never been found, thus becoming part of the great mysteries of history and the source of many legends.
