He had seen this city created in the year 1043 and this is where the text is kept that made him a legend: the manuscript of the Poem of Mio Cid. To go through the streets of Vivar del Cid nowadays is to do so for the sake of history. In the Monastery of Nuestra Señora del Espino, in Santa Gadea del Cid, and founded in 1477 by the Padilla family, has been kept the manuscript of the poem until 1779, when it was moved to the National Library of Madrid.

In spite of time that has passed, the town still identifies very strongly the character of Don Rodrigo and every July they go back to medieval times and celebrate the local festival in honour of el Cid Campeador.
