Before leaving the territory of Burgos, el Cid went to the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña to say goodbye to his daughter and his wife. Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar entrusted the abbot, don Sancho, to look after his family in the monastery. The troops of Abderraman III destroyed the temple in the year 953 and it was rebuilt in the 11th century. From the original building there is still a tower and a wing of the Romanesque-style cloister. The rest now belongs to the Gothic period.
At the doors to the monastery there is a monolith in honour of Babieca, the horse the Campeador rode for about 40 years. Over an atrium, on the right side of the church a simple monument recalls the bitter exile of el Cid, and Doña Jimena which on their knees proclaims: "Campeador, Campeador what a noble person you are. ¡Oh! Your exile is only the work of your enemies with their evil plots!".
