Founded on the 15th February 1143 by Doña Estefanía de Armegol, Countess of Urgell and grand-daughter of Count Ansúrez, to help re-populate the Señoríos of Curiel, Peñafiel and Cuellar. It became the headquarters of the Fundación Las Edades del Hombre.

The French monks that lived there implanted the Benedictine Order. They create a farm or monastic estate. In 1432 a monastic reform takes place and it becomes more austere following the preachings of San Bernardo.

After the Desamortizaciones (state appropriation of church lands) in the beginning of the 19th century, in 1835 it finally passes into private hands, the Baron Carlos de Quessel. In 1964 is bought by the Bishopric of Vallalolid.
