Masquerades in the province of Zamora
Winter in the province of Zamora is time for masquerades, festive traditions whose origin and symbolism date back to the pre-Roman period and which coincide with the winter solstice. Every December 26, the Zangarrón of Sanzoles del Vino, dressed in colorful clothes, a leather mask and a headdress of colored ribbons, chases the neighbors and visitors in search of the bonus. Riofrío de Aliste celebrates the Carochos Festival every January 1, developed as if it were a street theater performance, in which the appearance of the Carochos, wrapped in smoke and uttering loud screams, is as spectacular as their clothing.
But they are not the only ones. This ethnographic treasure has multiple manifestations in locations spread throughout the Zamora geography, each with its particular and great cultural value. All of them are brought together in the Zamora Masquerade Federation (Mascaraza), whose purpose is the safeguarding of this intangible heritage legacy.
