The Duero continues to leave its mark on the towns it passes through along the geography of Valladolid. There is a generous spread of Ribera del Duero vineyards on both sides of the fast-flowing river.
Two imposing castles have watched over the course of the Duero since ancient times: the Castillo de Curiel and the Castillo de Abajo de Curiel de Duero. Two churches, San Martin and Santa Maria, are preserved inside the town. Although it does not belong to the Ruta del Duero, Peñafiel is an important enclave on this route, as it is the wine producing capital of Ribera del Duero. The river Duraton joins the Duero very near here. Its impressive castle, which houses the Museo Provincial del Vino.
