Venta de Baños is one of the villages found along the Canal de Castilla. Next to this village in Baños de Cerrato is the Iglesia de San Juan de Baños. Also known as the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, this church is one of the most beautiful Spanish-Visigothic basilicas in Spain.
According to legend, the church which dates from 661 was constructed by order of Recesvinto who, on passing through Spain, drank water from the fountain situated next to the church. The water he drank from the ancient baths is said to contain properties which are good for the health. As a result Recesvinto was relieved of all ills and showed his gratitude by rebuilding the fountain and constructing the church. The east end of the church is made up of 3 barrel-vaulted apses. The 4 pillars supporting the arches which separate the naves are a striking feature of the church. These horseshoe arches are similar to the portico and the triumphal arch.
