Alar del Rey automatically calls to mind the Canal de Castilla. For years this village has lived off the traffic passing through the canal. If it were not for the canal, Alar del Rey would never have been heard of, and now this village draws tourists to discover the marvellous route along the canal.
This is the point along the Ramal del Norte where the river Pisuerga meets the Canal de Castilla and where the canal begins in Alar del Rey. This landmark is known as ‘kilómetro cero’ which means the zero kilometre mark and offers tourists a wonderful experience with nature. Poplar trees rising up over the river to listen to the sound of the water flowing by.
The cultural heritage of this village takes on a more modern air. The first retention, the dock and the gangway, declared cultural heritage in 1991 make up an interesting ensemble.
