Essential writer, poet and philosopher born in Bilbao in 1864 but strongly linked to Salamanca, where he died in 1936, and of whose University he was professor of Greek Language and Literature, as well as rector on three occasions. Member of the Generation of '98, he was a nonconformist intellectual whom Antonio Machado described as "quixotic". In 1914 he published Niebla , a work that marked a milestone in Spanish literature for its originality and which the author himself christened "nivola" instead of a novel. His excellent work, which includes essays, novels, poetry collections and plays, also stands out, among others, La tía Tula (1921) and San Manuel Bueno, mártir (1931).
