An essential figure of the Spanish Transition, he was born in Cebreros (Avila) in 1932 and died in Madrid in 2014.

In 1976 he was appointed President of the Government by Juan Carlos I, beginning a period of profound transformations such as the abolition of the Francoist Cortes or the legalization of political parties. In 1977, under the acronym of UCD, the first democratic president of the Government was elected, leading the constituent legislature until his resignation in 1981. After founding the CDS, he remained as a deputy until in 1991 he left the political front line to dedicate himself to law.

In 1996 he was awarded the Prince of Asturias for Concord for his career and in 2001 he was appointed president of the Victims of Terrorism Foundation. He died at the age of 81 after a long illness.
