A masterpiece of creative nature, the Monastery of Santa María de la Victoria was erected at the wish of Don Juan I as gratitude for the victory of the Portuguese over the Spanish in the battle of Aljubarrota, in the year 1385. It is the great monument of the late Portuguese Gothic, in which one of the first examples of the Manueline style appeared. Testimony of the exchange of influences in the arts, it is one of the most beautiful monastic complexes in Europe at the end of the Middle Ages.
