Berlanga de Duero is the capital of the region of the Marquesado de Berlanga, a territory which extends through the lands which belonged to el Cid. Due to his support for Alfonso VI in 1089 he was bestowed with several castles and areas of land as payment, one of which was the impressive fortress in this town.
El Cid was the first ‘custodian’ of Berlanga, which comes as a surprise to tourists due to its constructions and the preservation of the feel of an essentially medieval town.
