After leaving La Rioja, where the Romance language, the origin of today’s Spanish language, first showed signs of existence, tourists begin the Camino de la Lengua in Santo Domingo de Silos.

The village’s golden age took place in the 11th century, once the imposing monastery was restored, the monks spent hours working on the Scriptorium. The famous Glosas Silenses, dating from that period, is one of the documents giving the Castellano language its origins. Today the Glosas are exhibited in the British Museum in London.

The library in the Monastery, considered the gem of religious architecture and a true cultural treasure, has over 60.000 volumes, several incunabulum, manuscripts, parchments and codices.
